Overseas: Exhibition “Painting and Art in Difficult Times” – Bavaria

At least 45 painters, some famous, some now forgotten, lived in the small village on Lake Chiemsee between 1918 and 1955. An exhibition is now presenting their works and biographies.

Some came to escape the Nazis’ pursuit. Others settled overseas because of the picturesque landscape or because friends already lived here. Others simply found life in the small town on the Chiemsee cheaper than in the city, especially in the bad times after the First World War. There were many reasons why artists moved overseas. “We were surprised that there were so many,” says Annemarie Kneissl-Metz, the local curator.
