Over 150 fans arrested for anti-Semitic chants before match in Amsterdam

Hate took the place of sport on Saturday in Amsterdam. More than 150 fans have been arrested by Dutch police for singing anti-Semitic chants ahead of a game between Ajax and Alkmaar, police said.

The facts occurred at a metro station near the Johan Cruijff Arena, where Ajax plays, around 5:30 p.m.

The match still took place

“The supporters were asked several times to stop singing” before making the arrests, police added. According to AT5 radio, the 154 supporters arrested were from Alkmaar, which the police did not confirm. The match took place and ended in a 0-0.

Ajax Amsterdam is often associated with the city’s Jewish community, not least because some of its managers and players in the 1960s and 1970s were Jewish.
