Two weeks after escaping from an Israeli maximum security prison, the last two of a total of six Palestinian militants have been recaptured. The fact that the men managed to escape through a kind of tunnel was extremely embarrassing for the Israeli prison administration.

The Israeli security forces are all the more satisfied that all men have now been caught again. “It is done,” said Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, thanking the security forces who worked day and night. Four prisoners had already been caught. The remaining two were in a building in Jenin in the occupied West Bank.

Access by special forces

The domestic secret service Schin Bet had researched her whereabouts, and access was carried out by special units from the army and police. During the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Jenin, protests and riots by Palestinians broke out. Five of the six prisoners belong to the Palestinian Islamic Jihad. Several of them have carried out or organized deadly terrorist attacks.

For many Palestinians, however, the men were heroes and political prisoners, which they justify with the Israeli occupation. The men’s outbreak had what it takes to destabilize the situation between Israelis and Palestinians. The fact that all six men were caught alive reduces the risk of escalation. In the short term, however, there could be a reaction – for example, a rocket from the Gaza Strip could be fired into Israel.
