Out for Michael Maertens as Salzburg’s Everyman – Culture

To his own surprise, Michael Maertens will not play Everyman again at the Salzburg Festival next year. In general, there will be a completely new production of Hugo von Hofmannsthal’s traditional play. This means that director Michael Sturminger is also out – and the entire production is canceled. What may not be worth news in the large radius of the cultural world is a big hit in Austria and, at least in the realms of German-speaking theater, a surprising occurrence. The German news agency DPA speaks of a “bang bang”. Their Austrian counterpart, the APA, first informed about the plans for a completely new “Everyman” and quoted the main actor Maertens as saying: “I was surprised and astonished by this decision, which was made without a single conversation with me.” His contract lasted two years and discussions had already been held with him until 2026.
