The CDU politician Wanderwitz, the federal government’s Eastern Commissioner, has expressed clear criticism of the Union’s election campaign. In the daily topics he said, neither the staff nor the content have been convincing as desired.

The Eastern Commissioner of the Federal Government and CDU top candidate in Saxony, Marco Wanderwitz, criticized the Union and the leadership of the election campaign after the last polls on the federal election.

In the daily topics Wanderwitz said that the Union had “not been able to convince” so far. Neither with the staff nor with content-related offers “as we would like ourselves to be”. The federal election is “completely open”.

Wanderwitz himself sees his criticism as a “wake-up call at the right time”, not as a “feeling that we are satisfied with the surveys”. One is “worried because we actually wanted to be in a better position than has been the case up to now,” said Wanderwitz.

“After this long chancellorship, after this era of Angela Merkel over four electoral terms, we must above all answer the question: How should our country go into another good future.” People are aware that “we are in a lot of structural changes and that this is not an easy situation.”

“Union has a good program”

The Union had a good program, but it had not yet succeeded in convincing people sufficiently. One has to question oneself intenisv whether the answers are convincing.

When asked about opinion polls in which Union supporters wish that Markus Söder should replace Armin Laschet, they were noticed and “put their fingers in the wound”. “We have to work to change that”.

“I would like to win this election,” said Wanderwitz, and that presupposes “that the two party leaders work hand in hand on the team and do not point fingers at each other.”

Criticism of his own election campaign also from Günther

Schleswig-Holstein’s Prime Minister Daniel Günther made a similar statement on the election campaign so far. The CDU politician told the “Handelsblatt”: “That doesn’t convince anyone.” A more thorough discussion of the content is needed. “We have to focus on the issues that are important to people.”

Günther said the claim of the CDU / CSU had to be “at least 30 percent” – and “we are currently not meeting our own demands”.
