“You don’t hit people over a joke”: Ricky Gervais attacks Will Smith
Ricky Gervais has spoken out about Will Smith slapping Chris Rock in the face.

Many people understood that Will Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock at the Oscars. Not so Ricky Gervais: The Brit expressed harsh criticism of the actor.
He’s the expert on cultured audience abuse: when Ricky Gervais performs at an event, none of the celebrities present should feel safe. His opening speech at the Golden Globes 2020, for example, is legendary – when he made fun of Hollywood stars from Leonardo DiCaprios to Martin Scorsese with sometimes crude jokes.
Gervais smiled wearily at Chris Rock’s jokes at this year’s Oscars. The comedian had told Pinkett Smith he was looking forward to the second part of GI Jane, referring to the actress’ shaved head. Will Smith’s wife suffers from patchy hair loss.
The fact that the joke led to a scandal because Will Smith then stormed the stage and slapped Chris Rock – the Brit has no understanding for that: “You don’t hit people for a joke, no matter how bad it is,” he said in a video question session at Twitter. “And it wasn’t even bad. That was the tamest joke I would have ever told.”

A particular annoyance for him are the critics who describe Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair loss as a disability. “Someone said they were joking about her disability,” said Gervais. He then refers to himself: He too is slowly getting thin on his head. Then he would also be disabled – and now get the best parking spaces. He’s also fat, it’s a disease. “I’m fat and I’m going to be bald” – now he wants to get benefits for it.
A few days ago, Ricky Gervais had already commented on the incident – and also revealed which saying he would have brought: “I would not have joked about his wife’s hair,” said Gervais at the time. “I would have made a joke about her boyfriend.” A nod to Jada Pinkett Smith dating musician August Alsina at times during her marriage to Will Smith.
For Smith, the incident during the Oscars ceremony ten days ago will have an aftermath: the first film projects are on hold, the 53-year-old left the Academy – and now there are initial demands for him to be deprived of the film award. All because of a joke he didn’t like.
