Netflix received 18 nominations at the Oscars. This means that the streaming service is ahead again this year.

Netflix has won the battle of streaming services for the most Oscar nominations – and has also left its competitor Apple behind. Netflix has 18 nominations, including one for best film for “Maestro” with Bradley Cooper (49) and Carey Mulligan (38). Apple, on the other hand, has 13 mentions.

“Maestro” in particular makes Netflix a nomination star

Netflix’s chances of success at the Oscars on March 10 in Los Angeles are based primarily on the Leonard Bernstein biopic directed by Bradley Cooper. There are seven nominations for “Maestro” alone. Apple is fighting for the coveted gold trophy with “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Napoleon”. The Walt Disney Company has secured a total of 20 nominations – but these are divided between its various content brands and platforms such as 20th Century Studios, Disney+, Hulu, Lucasfilm Ltd., Marvel Studios and Pixar Animation Studios.

How the industry portal “Variety” reports, streaming services and film studios made “extravagant spending during the awards season.” Some films even had an eight-figure advertising budget. The 2023 strikes by writers’ and actors’ unions have cut marketing campaigns, leaving money left over. This could be used for promotional activities leading up to major awards ceremonies, such as special influencer screenings and panel discussions. “Barbie”, “Killers of the Flower Moon”, “Maestro” and “Oppenheimer” were among the biggest donors. This seems to have been particularly worthwhile for Universal’s “Oppenheimer”: The film is entering the Oscar race with the most nominations. The 13 opportunities include the important categories of best film and best director.
