When the two presenters Riz Ahmed and Allison Williams announced the nominees for Best Picture, the triumph and surprise for the Germans was complete: “Nothing New in the West”, Edward Berger’s Netflix adaptation of the famous Erich Maria Remarque novel, enters the race in the top category – as well as in eight other categories, as best foreign film and for camera, make-up, set design, sound, visual effects, adapted screenplay and for the music by Volker Bertelmann. There has never been such a success for German cinema at the Oscars.
