Oscar Awards: Who speaks, who sings – who wins?

The Oscars are being presented again in Hollywood today. It is clear who has the most nominations, who sings and who moderates. But the most important questions are only clarified in the show: Who will win?

Actually, everything is very simple: You can calculate who will get the Oscar in each category – at least that’s what the “Hollywood Reporter” writes. The magazine’s “calculation” includes, among other things, nominations in other categories, previous award ceremonies such as the SAG Awards and betting odds.

Accordingly, the biopic drama “Oppenheimer” is the top favorite for best film with a probability of 78.4 percent. Other forecasts don’t work very differently, they just don’t have a mathematical tinge.

“Oppenheimer” the most nominations

In fact, all specialist magazines, internet portals and commentators agree that “Oppenheimer” will win. It has 13 nominations: Oscars are very likely for director Christopher Nolan, leading actor Cilian Murphy, for Robert Downey Jr. as best supporting actor, for best original screenplay, best cinematography, best sound, editing and soundtrack.

That would be eight Oscars, and the film is also being considered for a few more. No other nominated film even comes close. Neither Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” with its ten nominations, nor Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” with at least eight nominations.

“Oppenheimer” is not only considered a big Oscar favorite – the film also won at other awards, like here at the SAG Awards.

Gladstone top contender for best Leading actress

Lily Gladstone, the lead actress in “Killers of the Flower Moon” about the systematic murder of women from the Osage tribe in Oklahoma, is considered a top contender in this category – the first member of an indigenous people in the USA.

Emma Stone from the feminist steampunk Frankenstein variation “Poor Things” is considered a possible surprise winner. “Barbie” actress Margot Robbie, on the other hand, isn’t even nominated – and the blockbuster has little chance of winning in most other categories either.

Da’Vine Joy Randall is almost universally listed as best supporting actress. She stars in “The Holdovers”, a tragicomedy about a few students, a teacher and the cook – Randall – who spend the Christmas holidays alone in a boarding school while everyone else is with their families.

Chance for German nominations?

Last year, from a German perspective, the remake of “Nothing New in the West” was extremely successful. What Germany’s chances look like this year depends on how strictly you view it.

The nomination for best actress – in “Anatomy of a Case” – is already a huge success for Sandra Hülser; Many see good Oscar chances for the film in the “Best Original Screenplay” category.

And the concentration camp historical drama “The Zone Of Interest” has a great chance of being named best international film. In it, Hülser plays the wife of Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höß. They seem to ignore it, but the horror in the neighboring camp can be heard every minute.

The report “20 Days in Mariupol” from the beginning of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine is also oppressive. It is considered a contender for the award for best documentary film. The ARD was involved in the production.

Red carpet, Jimmy Kimmel and Billie Eilish

The destroyed Mariupol and the red carpet – one can hardly imagine a more stark contrast. But of course the carpet has been laid, of course the gala will be magnificent, of course there will be lots of celebrities there.

Talk show host Jimmy Kimmel will moderate the event for the fourth time. He is simply a safe bet. The trophies will be presented by stars such as Nicolas Cage, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jessica Lange, Al Pacino, Jennifer Lawrence and many others.

Of course there is also music – and that’s where “Barbie” hits: Ryan Gosling and Mark Ronson sing “I’m Just Ken”, and Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell sing “What Was I Made For?” – this will probably also be the winner in the “Best Original Song” category.
