Organic food – Özdemir wants to promote organic farming – economy

Federal Food Minister Cem Özdemir is counting on a stronger push for organic food in Germany. “Organic has long been more than just a trend,” said the Green politician. At the same time, regionality is playing an increasingly important role. In order to serve both, the proportion of organic farming should be increased to 30 percent by 2030 instead of the previously targeted 20 percent of agricultural land. It is currently 10.3 percent. The Ministry sees greater growth potential in the catering trade and generally in out-of-home catering. Funding is intended to further improve the conditions for production, processing and marketing. According to a survey commissioned by the ministry, 38 percent of respondents buy organic food often or only. 41 percent stated that they often want to buy organic products in the future – only six percent plan to do so. The most popular organic products are eggs, vegetables and fruit, and most people still shop in supermarkets.
