This optical illusion is amazing.
Two orange circles are each framed by blue circles.
Now the question is, which of the orange circles is bigger?
Even if we know the answer, our brain plays tricks on us. Because the two circles are exactly the same size. Only when we remove the blue circles can we confirm this fact.
The optical illusion impressively shows how the brain classifies the signals received from the eye’s optic nerve and puts them into the respective context. The visual information is captured by the lens of the eye and converted into individual nerve signals in the retina. Then these individual signals are transmitted via the optic nerve to the region of the brain called the visual cortex. There they are put together to form the overall picture we perceive.
What we think is the image our eyes provide is actually an interpretation of the brain’s received nerve signals. The brain therefore reconstructs the images based on experiences.
The optical illusion of circles of the same size literally shows us that we cannot trust our optical perception.
