Optical illusion: can you solve the riddle of the Hermann grid?

Watch the video: Optical illusion – can you solve the riddle of the Hermann grid?

This optical illusion has puzzled scientists for over 150 years.
The so-called Hermann lattice was first introduced in 1870 by Ludimar Hermann. Since this phenomenon was also noticed by Ewald Hering, it is also known as the Hering lattice.
It is a white grid on a black background. Blurred black dots can be seen at the intersections of the white lines. However, if you fix one of these points, it disappears again.
For a long time it was assumed that the effect came from an illusion of contrast. However, this assumption could be refuted. If you change the grid only slightly, the illusion disappears, although the contrast remains the same.
So even after 150 years, there is still no explanation.
