Seven Oscars for the favorite: “Oppenheimer” is the winner of the evening. The German candidates Wim Wenders and Ilker Çatak came away empty-handed – but two films with Sandra Hülser received awards.

Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” won the Oscar for best film. The US Film Academy awarded its most important prize to the biographical historical film about the inventor of the atomic bomb at night in Los Angeles.

The film won a total of seven Oscars: Nolan himself received the award for best director for his work. The production also received two acting awards: Irishman Cillian Murphy, who plays the US physicist Robert Oppenheimer, was honored as best male actor. Robert Downey Jr. received the award for best supporting actor – he played Oppenheimer’s opponent and politician Lewis Strauss. The film had received 13 nominations in advance, more than any other production.

Emma Stone for best female lead

This year’s award for best female lead went to Emma Stone for her performance in “Poor Things.” The grotesque comedy received a total of four awards, for example for costume and make-up design. The German Sandra Hülser, who was also nominated in the best actress category, came away empty-handed. The films by the two German directors Ilker Çatak (“The Teacher’s Room”) and Wim Wenders (“Perfect Days”) also did not receive any awards.

Prizes for “The Zone of Interest” and “Anatomy of a Case”

Nevertheless, two films in which Hülser appeared won: the British Auschwitz drama “The Zone of Interest” won the prize in the best international film category. In it, the German actress plays the wife of Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höß. The film “Anatomy of a Case” – in which Hülser plays a successful author who is accused of murdering her husband – was awarded for the best original screenplay.

Actress Da’Vine Joy Randolph won best supporting actress for her role in the drama “The Holdovers.” The American is also known as a musical actress. The actress tearfully thanked the audience. “Thank you for acknowledging me.”

Documentary about Mariupol

The work “20 ​​Days in Mariupol” was awarded the best documentary film. The film by Mstyslav Chernov, Michelle Mizner and Raney Aronson-Rath showed the experiences of journalists from the AP news agency who stayed in the Ukrainian port city for around three weeks when it was besieged by Russian forces in early 2022. At great risk, they documented the catastrophic consequences of the siege for the civilian population. The documentary, made in collaboration with the SWR has already received numerous awards.

The Gaza War was also remembered during the award ceremony. “The Zone of Interest” director Jonathan Glazer said: “Whether it’s the victims of October 7th in Israel or the ongoing attack on Gaza, everyone is a victim of this dehumanization,” the filmmaker said.

Host Jimmy Kimmel led through the almost three and a half hour show, which was staged more quickly than in previous years. The highlight for many was the appearance of actor Ryan Gosling, who sang the song “I’m Just Ken” from the film “Barbie” with dozens of dancing men.
