Opera for the Blind: Hearing Seeing – Culture

Hans Peter Sperber is familiar with kidneys. “Preferably sweet and sour, with lots of onions,” he says. The kidneys are part of the production of Georges Bizet’s “Carmen” at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin, which is quite juicy in general. Instead of cigarettes, Norwegian director Ole Anders Tandberg lets the smugglers deal in human organs. And to convince Carmen of his virility, the torero Escamillo hands her the freshly cut testicles of a bull. He can’t shock Sparrowhawk with that either. “Best in fine strips and breaded,” says the genuine Franconian, who ended up in Berlin. “If this continues,” comments his female companion, “I’ll send you to the jungle camp.”
