Opencast lignite mining in North Rhine-Westphalia: Lützerath is scheduled to be cleared in January

Preparations to evacuate the occupied town of Lützerath at the Garzweiler II opencast lignite mine are already underway. Now it is becoming apparent when the large-scale operation will start.

Just a few days ago, NRW Interior Minister Herbert Reul formally launched the process of clearing the occupied town of Lützerath at the Garzweiler II open-cast lignite mine. Now it is becoming clear when it is actually supposed to start. The eviction is probably planned for January.

The Ministry of the Interior confirmed a corresponding report from the “Spiegel” to the WDR on Saturday. There was a police spokesman there Aachen said: “The eviction is expected to take place in January.”

Narrow time window

Observers had already expected that this would happen at the beginning of the year. Because time is pressing. The energy company RWE, which is allowed to excavate the coal under Lützerath, always points out that the clearing season ends at the end of February. After that, the trees around Lützerath may no longer be felled. Clearing and clearing should be done at the same time. That is why January is now apparently being targeted.
