“Talent Monument” – this is the motto under which the open monument day is taking place nationwide today. Depending on the weather, an ice cellar opens in Hamburg and a natural swimming pool in Lübeck. An overview.
Around 6,000 sites open on Open Monument Day their doors. In 2023, Germany’s largest cultural event will celebrate its 30th anniversary. Guided tours, concerts, readings and children’s events invite you to trace the past – even in monuments that are otherwise inaccessible.
The motto “Talent Monument” is intended to honor those who work in the background, maintain monuments or recognize them as worthy of a monument. The offer is huge and extremely diverse. Anyone who would like to take part in a guided tour or trip should inform themselves in advance: many offers require prior registration.
Lower Saxony: Between rural life and industrialization
You can immerse yourself in the history of Lower Saxony in palaces, fortresses, churches, farms and former factories. How did farmers live in the Altes Land in the 18th century? The Altländer Haus in Stade, a marsh farmhouse from 1733, provides insights. Memorials commemorate the victims of National Socialism, such as the Esterwegen memorial in Emsland. Those interested can also get around in a monument: there is a museum railway in Bruchhausen-Vilsen (Diepholz district).

The Ice cellar in Altona was built around 1870 below the house at Lessers Passage 4. During the Second World War, the ice cellar was converted into an air raid shelter. The premises were only rediscovered a few years ago.
