Online Access Act: A digital public authority mailbox for everyone

No more paperwork: With a new edition of the online access law, the federal government wants to push ahead with the sluggish digitization of the administration. Whether that works depends on the municipalities.

The traffic light tries to restart the digital administration – with the help of the already existing so-called BundID. Almost 600 administrative processes should be able to be processed via this digital citizen account. To register, you need an electronic identity card or the Elster certificate from your tax return.

So far, the federal, state, district and local authorities have offered very different solutions. This is now to be standardized across Germany.

“Want to make life easier for citizens”

Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser promises an end to the paper economy. The signing of an application and the subsequent scanning should also be omitted. “We want a digital state that is there for its citizens and makes their lives easier,” says the SPD politician. “That’s what digitization is all about: Not about additional bureaucracy, but about making things easier.”

The Online Access Act should ensure that the German administration becomes more digital by the end of the year.
