One year in prison for calling for murder and offering mortars to rioters on Snapchat

He says he “wanted to make the buzz”. A man, whose age has not been specified, was sentenced to a prison term by the Lyon criminal court for “public and direct provocation not followed by effect to commit a crime or an offense, and to a armed mob”.

He is accused of having posted “hate messages” on Snapchat “calling for riots, murder and insurrection”, said the Lyon police on Thursday. But also to have sold or offered for sale “items useful for the rioters”, such as mortars.

Incarcerated

A first individual, suspected of being the account holder, was arrested on July 6. At his home, the investigators found several telephones, including the one used to post the messages. Finally exonerated, the man was released. But one of his acquaintances was then identified and arrested.

The latter admitted to being the author of the messages but “denied their provocative nature”. This did not prevent him from being tried in immediate appearance and being imprisoned after his conviction on Tuesday evening.
