Now he has said goodbye to all forms, a few women whisper – and by that they mean not only painting, but also the manners of Joseph Mallord William Turner. In 19th century England, he was considered a visionary artist, a master of light – but also an eccentric ruffian who offended his fellow human beings.
Director Mike Leigh has made a feature film about Turner with his favorite actor Timothy Spall, which is much more than a conventional artist biopic, illuminated by a lazy sun and thus looking like a Turner painting. Leigh’s film was released in cinemas almost ten years ago and can now be seen as part of an Open Scene at the Film Museum. The occasion is the Turner exhibition in the Lenbachhaus, where you can currently admire the master’s perfectly formed works in the original.
