Then-literature chief Michiko Kakutani hailed the translation of the first part, “The Years of Ascension,” as “a fascinating Shakespearean simile of how the confluence of fortuitous circumstances, a ruthless individual and the willful blindness of others transform a country and, in Hitler’s fall that can lead the world into an unimaginable nightmare”.
