On the occasion of the 80th birthday of the historian Volker Ullrich – culture

The historian, especially the German one, can count himself lucky if he is noticed outside of his university, if possible even read. Volker Ullrich even made it into the 2016 with his Hitler biography New York Times. Then-literature chief Michiko Kakutani hailed the translation of the first part, “The Years of Ascension,” as “a fascinating Shakespearean simile of how the confluence of fortuitous circumstances, a ruthless individual and the willful blindness of others transform a country and, in Hitler’s fall that can lead the world into an unimaginable nightmare”.
