On the future of the Berlin Volksbühne: The Ghost House – Culture

Visits to the Berlin Volksbühne currently have something spooky about them. After René Pollesch’s death almost three weeks ago, one has to think of the many other Volksbühne artists who are no longer alive, Christoph Schlingensief for example, the actor Hendrik Arnst or the set designer Bert Neumann, alongside and with Frank Castorf, the influential artist of the Volksbühne their heyday. That time has long been over. The Volksbühne on Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz has been the worst-run theater in Berlin for years. For long periods it teetered on the edge of insignificance. After a somewhat too assertive State Secretary for Culture ignorantly thought it was a good idea in 2017 to throw Castorf and his anarcho gang out of some pretty stunning theater artists, the Volksbühne has become the plaything of various dilettantes in the theater management.
