Maryse Condé only became known to us relatively late: when her extremely successful novel “Segou” was published in German, she had already been well known internationally for a long time. For two decades she was considered the all-time favorite for the Nobel Prize in Literature. When she was awarded the “alternative Nobel Prize” in 2018 because the Swedish Academy suspended the awarding of the prize due to internal distortions, it was seen as little consolation for the fact that she had not long since received the “real” Nobel Prize.
