Omikron wave in Great Britain: Queen cancels Christmas lunch with the family – Royals

Corona also throws a spanner in the works for the royals at Christmas – they are like every other family: Because of the rapidly expanding Omicron variant in Great Britain, Queen Elizabeth II (95) canceled her traditional pre-Christmas family reunion. The palace announced on Thursday.

The explanation from palace circles: “Too many people’s Christmas plans are at stake.”

Like many older Britons, the Queen is now likely to have been vaccinated against the corona virus at least three times. Nonetheless, the omicron variant of the coronavirus is currently giving politicians a headache in the UK. In London it is already considered to be predominant. According to government estimates, hundreds of thousands are infected every day.

Usually the Queen’s children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and cousins come together for lunch in Buckingham Palace the week before Christmas. The family reunion had to be canceled last year due to the pandemic. This year it should have taken place at Windsor Castle, as the “Sun” reported.

The Queen spends the festive season at her country estate in Sandringham, East England. Here, too, she is usually visited by different parts of the family. This year marks the first time since their wedding in 1947 that she has to spend the holidays without her husband Prince Philip, who died in April at the age of 99.
