Omikron in New York: 22,000 new infections per day – and the trend is rising. – Politics

In New York City, around 22,000 people are infected every day by the Omikron variant – and the trend is rising. More and more children with Covid-19 are also being hospitalized. New Year’s Eve should still be celebrated, but reduced.

A popular question about New York’s New Year’s Eve is how many people come to the Times Square celebrations in Manhattan. Until the 1990s, the police assumed that there were around 500,000. In 1999, the then mayor Rudy Guiliani decided that it should be around two million people – simply because that sounded better. His successors in office were happy to repeat this number. It probably has little to do with reality.
