She was eighth in the first round, but then she caught up: Hannah Neise is the first German Olympic champion in skeleton. The 21-year-old from Winterberg won the eighth German gold at the Winter Games in China.
The German gold series in the Yanqing Olympic ice track continues. Hannah Neise was the first German skeleton pilot to win the Olympics. The 21-year-old from Winterberg won after four runs with a lead of 0.62 seconds over Australian Jaclyn Narracott. Kimberly Bos from the Netherlands secured bronze ahead of Tina Hermann from WSV Königssee.
The German athletes had previously won all four luge competitions and World Champion Christopher Grotheer was the first German to win skeleton gold.
In the end a huge lead
In the third run, Neise had pushed past Narracott with a track record of 1:01.44 minutes and went into the final with a lead of 0.14 seconds. She was only eighth after the first run.
In the final, despite her lack of experience, she made the fewest mistakes of the medal contenders and ended up winning by a huge margin. The German women had won Olympic medals before the races north of Beijing, but had never climbed to the top of the podium.
Kerstin Szymkowiak won silver in Vancouver in 2010, Anja Huber (now Selbach) took bronze. Four years ago in Pyeongchang, Jacqueline Lölling was only beaten by Brit Elizabeth Yarnold.
