Is Germany starting a new attempt for an Olympic application? The Berlin LSB President Thomas Haertel would be in favor of a joint candidacy of the capital, Munich and Warnemünde.

President Thomas Haertel of the State Sports Association of Berlin has submitted an application from the capital for the 2036 Olympic Games Munich and Warnemünde proposed.

“On the one hand, Berlin and Munich already have Olympic experience and on the other hand, together with Warnemünde, they already have 100 percent of the sports facilities that are needed for the organization,” said the 72-year-old to the “Tagesspiegel”.

The requirements for applicants are now different. “There shouldn’t be any more expensive competition with other cities at national level, they can even apply together. That saves a lot of money,” explains Haertel.

Want to involve society more this time

The LSB boss does not see the critical date of 1936 as an obstacle, but as an opportunity. “We would like to show 100 years after the propaganda games that we are an open and democratic country. It would also be strange if Germany were to apply for this date without Berlin. Berlin then has to be on the field,” said Härtel.

It is important to get the public involved. “This time we want to involve society more, not just give it something. And with its new regulations, the IOC gives society more leeway than before,” said Härtel.

At the beginning of the year, the German Olympic Sports Confederation started a strategy process for a new application for summer or winter games. Co-applications from several cities also seem possible. The next summer games are already assigned to Paris 2024, Los Angeles 2028 and Brisbane 2032.
