No spectators, participants infected with Covid-19, limited range of motion: How are the unusual circumstances affecting these summer games?

The Olympic Games in Tokyo 2021 will go down in history as unusual regardless of top athletic performance. Letting so many people from all over the world into a country for a major event during a pandemic has been and is much discussed. It has already been shown that a bubble is not impermeable even under strict rules: Some Covid-19 tests were positive in the first few days. The opening ceremony took place, the competitions take place in front of empty spectator stands until the end, the range of motion is severely restricted – and Corona is so much in focus that even the topic of doping fades into the background.

In this episode, presenter Anna Dreher talks about the atmosphere after almost a week of the Summer Games “And now to the sport” with SZ sports director Claudio Catuogno and Olympic reporter Volker Kreisl, who report for the Süddeutsche Zeitung from Tokyo, as well as Saskia Aleythe, Gabriele Pochhammer, Holger Gertz and Thomas Hahn.
