Olympia 2022, Alpine skiing: Silver sensation in the team event for Germany – Austria wins gold in Beijing

Those third at the World Championships lost an exciting final against second-placed Pyeongchang and top favorites Austria. After four runs it was 2:2, but after adding the best times for men and women, they were only 0.19 seconds short of the sensational victory.

Dürr presented in the fight for gold on the “rainbow” slope with her fourth success in the fourth duel. Substitute Julian Rauchfuss, who stood in for Straßer in the final, conceded the 1:1. Emma Aicher slipped away – 1:2. Then it came down to Alexander Schmid, who equalized against combined Olympic champion Johannes Strolz, but was a bit too slow. Reserve driver Kira Weidle was not used.

Bronze went to world champion Norway, who beat superstar Mikaela Shiffrin’s USA in the battle for third place. Shiffrin lost three of their four duels and leaves Beijing without a medal after various dramas.

In the semifinals, the DSV team prevailed against the USA (3:1), Dürr defeated Shiffrin in the process. In the quarterfinals, Pyeongchang winner Switzerland was eliminated (2:2, faster time), in the round of 16 vice world champion Sweden (3:1).

Cheering at DSV: “Medal is damn good”

The success prevented the second Olympic “clear round” in a row. “The medal is extremely good for us,” said alpine director Wolfgang Maier on “ARD”. “The hundredth issue is haunting us,” said Maier. Dürr and Kira Weidle, coming fourth in the individual races, narrowly missed out on a medal.

“It was a bit bitter,” said Maier on Sunday, but: “I’m just happy that we’re going home with a medal.”

The competition was postponed by one day due to wind on the Olympic mountain Xiaohaituo, but was marked by strong gusts. The flags at the direction gates were made more wind-permeable with holes and later even twisted, the athletes were protected with thick blankets at the finish.
