Oliver Welke: I have difficulties with women’s voices Entertainment

Oliver Welke (57) inspired people as a sports presenter for more than 20 years. And for almost 20 years he has been making viewers laugh with programs like the “heute-show”.

In the new edition of “Klein gegen Groß” (Saturday, 8:15 p.m., Das Erste) he now had to show whether he is still fit in this area five years after quitting sports. On the show by Kai Pflaume (56) faces his 13-year-old challenger Lukas. He is convinced that he can recognize 50 sports reporters better by their voice than professional Welke.

“At first I thought it was really easy, because in more than 20 years as a football presenter I had gotten to know or moderated many of them,” Welke told BILD. “But when you listen to the voices one after the other during the training camp, you first notice how similar some of them sound.”

The real challenge, however, is that colleagues do not speak in the style of a sports presenter, “but read out recipes or instructions for use. So there is a lot less pressure on the voice. Live commentators in particular want to convey this live experience and have these pressed voices. If that goes away, it’s something completely different.”

Oliver Welke prepared intensively for his duel. “At some point I stopped training. I noticed that it wasn’t getting better, but worse.”

Especially among the female gender. “I especially have difficulty distinguishing between women. I have a high failure rate there. But I have no idea what that is about. Maybe the frequency range.”
