From 1912 to 2020, the official posters of each edition are presented on the gates of the Hôtel de Ville in Paris. Alongside them, artistic posters. More than 900 days before the opening ceremony of the Paris Games, the City is slowly preparing to host the 2024 Olympics.
The ephemeral exhibition continues inside the “Paris Rendez-Vous” boutique, located in the Hôtel de Ville. Visitors can discover other posters, not exhibited in the street, like that of Mexico City 1968. “It appeals,” says Estelle, professor of plastic art, who likes to mix her world with that of the Olympic Games. It is a successful optical illusion. The poster is in constant motion. The official flags of the Olympic and Paralympic Games are also presented.
Art, sport and politics
Behind these often minimalist drawings, a political will: to make the country and its artists shine around the world. After 1950, the posters began. “They highlight great causes: ecology or equality between women and men,” explains Eric Monnin, vice-president for Olympism at the University of Franche-Comté. The dominant patriotism, before 1950, then disappears. “
