Old Masters: A visit to the Paris retirement home “Maison Nationale des Artistes”

Old masters live together in the “Maison Nationale des Artistes” in Paris. What does it mean to be creative until the end?

Scaffolding supports the walls of the old stately home, hidden in the posh Parisian suburb of Nogent-sur-Marne. “Maison Nationale des Artistes” is written in curved letters on the glass door – a retirement home for artists. The stately villa has had many years behind it, has seen wars end and presidents die. Just like their residents.

People usually meet in retirement homes who have nothing more in common than their level of care and the certainty that there is more life behind them than in front of them. Things are different in the “Maison Nationale des Artistes”: Here, illustrators, cineastes and actresses, singers, painters and dramaturges spend their last years, drawing, painting and making music.
