Germany usually only has one head of government or one head of government. But the pandemic is not waiting for coalition negotiations to be concluded. And Olaf Scholz can already test how crisis-proof the future government would be.

Between the past and the future, there is space for exactly one blue women’s handbag and a rather worn black briefcase on this special day. The latter is within easy reach on Olaf Scholz’s left, which gives him the opportunity to get a little work out at any time in the event that what is going on in the House no longer requires his full attention. Angela Merkel, whose chair back is still a bit higher than Scholz’s, could certainly get something out of her pocket. But it doesn’t.
