Olaf Scholz is the new Federal Chancellor.
But what do you really have to know about the politician?
We take a very close look at the past six decades.
ORIGIN
Olaf Scholz was born in Osnabrück in 1958 –
and baptized in Hamburg-Altona.
According to his own accounts, Scholz had a happy childhood in Hamburg with his brothers Jens and Ingo.
Already in his youth he got involved in politics and is head boy at the high school Rahlstedt in Hamburg.
POLITICAL AND PROFESSIONAL CAREER
He inherits the enthusiasm for Helmut Schmidt and Willy Brandt from his parents.
The youngster became a member of the SPD at the age of 17.
After finishing school, Scholz first studied law in Hamburg – then he did community service.
The first office of politician: Deputy Federal Chairman of the Jusos from 1982 to 1988.
Afterwards, the mid-20-year-old worked as a lawyer specializing in labor law.
The lawyer represented hundreds of employees in dismissal protection suits from the end of the 80s.
In 1998 the social democrat applies for a seat in the Bundestag and is directly elected in the Hamburg-Altona constituency.
This is followed by the offices of Hamburg Senator for the Interior and General Secretary of the SPD.
From 2007 to 2009 Scholz was Federal Minister for Labor and Social Affairs.
The Osnabrück resident was elected as the first mayor of Hamburg in 2011 and has held office for seven years.
During his term of office, the politician ensures that 10,000 new apartments are built in Hamburg every year.
He is also introducing free day care centers.
After the 2017 Bundestag election, Scholz was appointed Vice Chancellor and Federal Minister of Finance.
POLITICAL ACHIEVEMENTS
Labor Minister Scholz relies on short-time work benefits in 2008 as the banking and financial crisis escalates.
In this way, the SPD politician avoids high unemployment a year later.
Scholz showed his achievements as an election campaigner in 2011, when the SPD with him at the top achieved an astonishing election victory in Hamburg.
With 48.3 percent of the mood, the SPD gained 14 percent.
When he was elected as Federal Minister of Finance in 2018, Scholz would like to be named Vice Chancellor.
Even then, he seems to have an eye on the 2021 election.
In July 2020, the politician will be proposed as a candidate for chancellor.
In 2021 the success will be perfect and he will be appointed Federal Chancellor.
POLITICAL SCANDALS
During his time as Juso chairman, the SED focused on the politician.
At that time, the SED pursued the goal of bringing the Federal Republic into position against a NATO resolution.
Scholz is particularly interesting for the SED because he vehemently criticizes NATO and belongs to the Marxist wing of the Jusos.
Scholz becomes an important advocate of the GDR positions among the Young Socialists
The Hamburg Elbphilharmonie can only be completed in 2016 because the SPD politician is releasing an additional 200 million euros to the Hochtief construction company.
The headlines hit the headlines in 2017 when the G20 summit took place in Hamburg amid major riots.
The mayor at the time ignored all warnings and compared the global political get-together with the annual port birthday.
The result: tough police officers at demonstrations and war-like scenes on the streets of Hamburg.
Almost 500 police officers and several demonstrators are injured during the G20 riots.
The latest headlines: The Social Democrat allegedly involved in the cum-ex tax scandal.
As finance minister, Scholz was the employer of the Bafin financial supervisory authority, who could prove insider trading.
The mayor at the time also met the Warburg banker Christian Olearius several times.
PRIVATE
In the 1980s, Scholz met his current wife, Britta Ernst.
“It was also my wife who brought me to sport”.
During school he hated sports.
The SPD politician now goes jogging regularly and enjoys cycling.
Another passion: reading.
The 63-year-old lives in Potsdam with his wife.
