For 70 years, a special commission has been testing the taste, smell, appearance and consistency of the sausages at Oktoberfest. A variant is not yet available.

The Wiesn sausage testing committee met and pork sausages on the Oktoberfest tasting. Eight sausages from different manufacturers that are available at the festival were brought to the table. Vegan sausages were not included – but they were considering expanding the test in the future, they said. The sausages have been tested at Oktoberfest for 70 years; the commission met for the first time in 1953.

At the blind tasting on Tuesday, mustard and beer were taboo. Nothing should distort the taste. Salty, with a herbal aroma – or unusually lemony: in addition to taste, smell, appearance and consistency were also evaluated. The commission includes representatives from consumer associations, manufacturers and experts, including from the city’s veterinary office.

The appetite for pork sausages at Oktoberfest was, at least in previous years, considerable: in some years, almost half a million sausages went into the stomach – about as many as chicken. Traditionally, there are also XXL sausages half a meter long at the Oktoberfest. But vegan is also on the rise at Oktoberfest: after the vegan white sausage, there is now also the vegan meatloaf.
