Kai Wegner has been at the head of the Berlin Senate for less than a year. Now the governing mayor is making headlines with a relationship that also has a political dimension.

Berlin’s Governing Mayor Kai Wegner and Education Senator Katharina Günther-Wünsch (both CDU) have made their relationship public. As the lawyer Christian Schertz told the DPA news agency, both of them decided to enter into a relationship in autumn 2023. He was asked to “confirm this for reasons of transparency to ensure clarity for everyone involved in the professional collaboration.”

Wegner and Günther-Wünsch ask for respect for privacy

The lawyer further explained: “Regardless of the fact that such a constellation does not contradict any legal provisions, it is of course self-evident that those involved strictly separate private and professional matters in connection with their official duties.” Schertz also asked that the privacy of Wegner and Günther-Wünsch be respected, also in the interest of their families.

Shortly before the end of the year, the Senate Chancellery announced that Wegner and his previous partner, with whom he has two children, would have separated in September 2023. A few days ago, Berlin media first reported on a possible relationship between Wegner and Günther-Wünsch.

Conflict of interest possible?

Both Berlin government members initially did not comment on this, which is why questions arose about a possible conflict of interest and possible political consequences.
