From the end of January to mid-March, Mallorca shows itself from a very special side. A sea of flowers stretches across large parts of the island. The fascinating natural spectacle is called Almond Blossom and attracts nature lovers every year. While the temperatures in Germany are still frosty, the sun is shining on Mallorca – and temperatures of up to 20 degrees are possible. The perfect starting point for the first almond tree buds to sprout.

Here you can see the almond trees

The flowering period depends on the weather conditions. In a severe winter, the start can also be pushed back. If you leave in mid-February, there is a high probability that you will see the flowers in all their glory. Around four million almond trees, either in gardens, plantations or growing wild, are at home on the island. The trees are usually the first to blossom on the flat plains in the southeast of Mallorca, and the last in the mountainous region of the Serra Tramuntana.

In the west and north you will find what you are looking for between Palma and Port d’Andratx, in the middle of the island there are trees in the area around Montuiri, Llucmajor and Sineu. In the south and east, specimens can be found at Felanitx, Cala Santanyi, Portocolom, Cala Figuera and Cala Millor.

An island celebrates

The almond trees of Mallorca have a long tradition. Arabs brought the plant to the island as early as the 10th century. Today there are 120 species that thrive on the island. The brown nut can be found in many products – almonds are used in perfumes, cosmetics and food. The almond cake “Gato de Almendra”, almond pudding, almond liqueur or almond milk are absolute bestsellers on the island.
