Tugs use the summer weather to cross over to Europe – boats have capsized again and again recently. Now many migrants have died again in a boat accident off the coast of Tunisia.

More than 20 refugees who wanted to cross the Mediterranean to Europe were killed in a boat accident off the coast of Tunisia. 50 inmates had been rescued, said the National Guard. Accordingly, the boat capsized on Sunday off the coast of the port city of Sfax. According to the information, the refugees came from sub-Saharan Africa.

Four boats have capsized since the end of June

According to the National Guard, a total of four boats with which refugees wanted to cross the Mediterranean from Sfax to Europe overturned since June 26th. 49 people died and 78 migrants were rescued.

On Saturday night, a boat also crashed off the southern Tunisian city of Zarzis, which had started in Libya with almost 130 migrants on board. Authorities said 43 people were killed and 84 were taken on board by fishermen and naval vessels. The Tunisian Red Crescent announced that the boat left the Libyan coastal city of Zuwara on Friday to cross the Mediterranean for Italy.

The number of migrants embarking on the dangerous crossing to Europe from the Tunisian coast rose by leaps and bounds in the past year. Most of them come from countries in sub-Saharan Africa.
