“Off season”, an effective frozen thriller, which blurs the tracks

An investigator, caught in the torment! In Out of season, broadcast this Thursday at 9:10 p.m. on France 3, Marina Hands plays Sterenn Peiry, a Swiss police captain, responsible for leading the investigation into the murder of a woman with a macabre scene. She is soon supported by her French counterpart Lyes Bouaouni (Sofiane Zermani) who reveals to her that another body has been found in a similar state on the other side of the border. A thriller around a not-so-ordinary serial killer…

As the mystery deepens, the investigator discovers that her son accidentally killed his girlfriend in a car. A twist at the end of the first episode that asks a chilling question: how far would you be able to go to protect your child?

An investigator in an “extreme situation”

Marina Hands took on the role because of the “extreme emotional situation this woman finds herself in. What her heart dictates to her will upset the order of things, the way she had planned her life, since she is a police captain, ”says the actress that 20 minutes met at the Séries Mania festival, where the Franco-Swiss series produced by the Fribourgeois Pierre Monnard, to whom we owe Platzspitz children and Anomaly. Out of season created by Sarah Farkas, Marine-Flores Rumi and Claire Kanni, navigates between law and ethics to ask us what we would do in the captain’s place.

All the more Sterenn Peiry is frankly disturbed by the death of her daughter three years earlier. “What she goes through emotionally as a woman and as a mother is so unbearable and upsetting in a life, both the mourning of a child, a second child in a terrible situation that she can lose too. We are in the human tragedy, comments Marina Hands. This torn between a vision of his life and how things happen, that’s what interested me “

A police duo that is both familiar and new

Marina Hands and Sofiane Zermani form a rather unique Franco-Swiss investigative duo on screen. “There is something very clever in the screenplay, it is that we imagine that we are starting with a genre film with somewhat stereotypical figures and this famous police duo, seen a billion times that often all opposes… Finally, we don’t talk about that at all. The series says that everything opposes them, that they are confronted with borders, barriers which should separate them, and in a rather natural way, everything binds them, ”explains the actress. She continues: “With Sofiane, we worked on the almost animal bond. He doesn’t speak. The idea is then to show how they talk to each other differently. We tamed each other on set the same way these investigators tamed each other on the show. »

A unique visual atmosphere

The series and the production are also based on the particular atmosphere of its setting: the small fictional ski resort Les Cimes, almost deserted, after the departure of the last seasonal workers. The series was shot in the Alps between Switzerland and France and required more than sixty days of filming, “I stayed immersed there for three months. The environment in which we live is extremely important. And there is something fatal about telling ourselves that nature survives us. In the series, we feel that nature is watching you and it becomes an ally or an enemy. For Sterenn in this case, it is rather an enemy, because it reminds him of the memory of the avalanche, ”explains Marina Hands.

And to continue: “We are in pure tragedy. We don’t really know what era we are in, in what country. It’s the mountains, the sky, nature, the trees and the human being in front of it. »

After a banal starting point: “Who is the edelweiss killer? » Out of season unfolds by exploring with finesse the traumas of the past of its heroes, the secrets of the inhabitants of the Cimes, and by making the plot do off-road rather than borrow the green tracks of the thriller.
