Of mothers and daughters: the new novel by Franziska Gänsler – Munich

A child disappears, searching for clues on the beach, seagulls attacking people – why the Augsburg author Franziska Gänsler also impresses with her second novel.

A seagull attacking a surfer. God knows there are more subtle ways to build suspense than using suspense master Hitchcock. But Franziska Gänsler, this delicate graphic artist among the young authors, does not show it, the bird attack. Zoey, her first-person narrator, watches the scene from her hotel room window. A gathering of people on the beach, somewhere on the Atlantic near Bordeaux, surfboards lying around, a lifeguard shouting “Tout est okay!” And by then it’s clear: Rien n’est okay! Nothing is good here, nothing at all.
