The fact that art has to be unprofitable is a basic law only in Germany, where the geniuses for it grow on trees. Jimmy Buffett was a genius and still made fabulous fortunes. He is said to have amassed a smooth billion nice round dollars with his songs, in which he lounged around in flip-flops and a Hawaiian shirt and celebrated the eternal summer. Not otherwise known for his good humour, Max Weber would have turned in disgust at Buffett’s Floridian work ethic, which involves getting one done before returning to the strenuous business of evenly tanning on the boat deck.
