Renata Scotto was not able to take on the role of Callas’s successor, the “voice subject” that was always being discussed, not only in Italy. Her powerful soprano voice and her timbre were too grounded for that, the coloratura ability for Vincenzo Bellini’s floating soprano women not brilliant enough, not quite ideal.
