Oberstdorf: Christmas tree made of beer crates – Bavaria

It’s a spruce with a history, but it can’t really do anything about it. She looks good on the market square in Oberstdorf. Stately growth, neatly decorated. Donated by a private individual, taken from the Oberstdorf area. And yet this year’s central Christmas tree in Germany’s southernmost community is in focus because of its history. The predecessor, last year, achieved national fame. The Oberstdorf Christmas tree 2022 also came from Sauerland, it was driven around 600 kilometers across the country. Putting it up as a package with other fir trees ended up costing 25,000 euros.

One could now argue that mangoes also come from Asia. But it’s not like there are hardly any trees growing around Oberstdorf, on the contrary. In addition to the discussion about the costs, which the Taxpayers’ Association also denounced in the end, Oberstdorf also had a full-blown debate about sustainability at the end of 2022. They wanted to save money this year, so the donation from a private citizen in the area was quite fitting. What is inappropriate, however, is that the municipality estimates the costs for setting up the spruce at a robust 13,200 euros. For the money you could completely buy out the Christmas tree sale around the corner.

The fact that they are not ashamed in Oberstdorf this time is due to the small print. The 13,200 euros also include two Christmas trees for local districts. In addition, according to the administration, they calculated correctly, unlike other communities. Working hours, transport, every conceivable item is included in the invoice. It may seem expensive, but it’s not – that’s the argument that not everyone will understand.

To be on the safe side, Oberstdorf could take a look into the northern Allgäu. The Irsee monastery brewery has been completely committed to sustainability since 2020. Every year, the brewery with inn and hotel puts up a Christmas tree that is more than 13 meters high – consisting of more than 1,000 beautifully decorated beer crates. A one-off investment of 800 euros for the fairy lights, says the managing director. Completely reusable as empties. That is exemplary. And a popular photo opportunity.
