Oberaudorf: supermarket instead of agriculture – Bavaria

The Inn valley near Oberaudorf is narrow, open spaces are rare, and the town center is lively. Nevertheless, the municipality wants to set up new shopping centers on a field measuring more than two and a half hectares.

From

Matthias Köpf, Oberaudorf

It was less than two weeks ago that Oberaudorf’s Mayor Matthias Bernhardt could hardly adequately emphasize the value of the increasingly scarce agricultural land in the community. The square meter price for it “can no longer be measured”, Bernhardt had said, and he was sure of the applause in the hall. At that time it was about the plans of the railway for new tracks in the direction of the Brenner, which would need a lot of space in the narrow Inn valley. The Gschwendtnerfeld, however, a meadow of more than two and a half hectares between the existing railway line and an industrial area including a supermarket, is close to the heart of Oberaudorf’s non-partisan mayor and most of the municipal councils for a different reason.
