Oak processionary moth: How to protect yourself from allergic reactions

Watch the video: Strong allergic reactions – how to protect yourself from oak processionary moths.

Favored by climate change, the oak processionary moth is spreading throughout Germany. The moth from the subfamily of processionary moths was actually considered almost extinct in this country. As the name suggests, they are mainly found on oaks. Anyone who likes to walk in parks or forests should therefore be particularly careful in summer. The moth itself does not pose any danger. But the caterpillar of the moth can certainly pose a threat to humans. Because the toxic stinging hairs can cause severe allergic reactions. They contain the nettle toxin “Thaumetopein”, which can cause rashes, itching, fever and dizziness in people. Particularly problematic: the animals lose their hair from the end of May to the beginning of July. The fine hairs break easily and can then be spread by the wind. The oak processionary moth often builds its distinctive ghost-like nests in the canopy of trees. Anyone who discovers a nest should report it immediately to the responsible health or forestry office. Keep your distance and do not touch the nest or caterpillars. If you do come into contact with the animal, you should shower immediately, wash your hair thoroughly, rinse your eyes with water and wash your clothes at at least 60°. If an allergic reaction occurs, consult a family doctor. If you are short of breath, contact the emergency services immediately.
