Many foods have a bad reputation in public opinion. What’s wrong with the prejudices against grain, coffee and milk?
Grain: On average, every German eats four slices of bread a day. On average, women eat just under one slice less. But how healthy is grain consumption? Grain products provide carbohydrates and dietary fiber – important substances that cover energy requirements. However, experts generally recommend choosing whole grain products for bread, cakes or muesli. Wheat and rye contain gluten, which can cause digestive problems in sensitive individuals. Whole grains contain more fiber, vitamins and minerals than white flour and are therefore better for digestion, among other things. In addition to whole grain products, potatoes, legumes, vegetables, fruit and nuts are also important sources of fiber.
Coffee: Coffee is primarily a luxury food and not a thirst quencher. The caffeine it contains has a stimulating and invigorating effect. According to a Harvard study, drinking coffee in moderation reduces the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Adults should not drink more than three to four cups a day. Basically, it is better to avoid sugar.
Milk: Milk and milk products provide readily available protein, vitamin B2 and calcium. Regular consumption of yoghurt, quark or cheese supports bone health. In addition, the consumption of dairy products reduces the risk of colon cancer. Current findings also suggest that around 150 g of yoghurt or kefir per day could reduce the risk of diabetes. However, critics warn against dairy products that come from factory farmed cows. This can contain residues of antibiotics, pus and pesticides.
So when the next little hunger comes: Choose the food carefully.
