Nuremberg’s Christ Child appears in Bavarian garb for the first time

The new Nuremberg Christ child, Nelli Lunkenheimer, is particularly looking forward to the Advent season and her many appearances. “It’s important to me that people now have a wonderful Christmas time, that I can bring this magic to the children,” said the 17-year-old. On Thursday, the student appeared for the first time at the Nuremberg State Theater in her angelic robe with golden wings, blonde curly wig and crown. It was “an indescribable feeling,” she said. “Very exciting, everything very new, but really beautiful.”

A jury recently chose the Nuremberg native to be the Christ Child for the next two years. This has been around since 1948. Actresses used to play the role, but since 1969 it has been girls from Nuremberg.

Nelli Lunkenheimer will have her most important appearance as a Christ child on December 1st: then she will open the world-famous Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt from the gallery of the Frauenkirche in front of thousands of people. She was a little nervous, but was really looking forward to all the appointments in the run-up to Christmas, she said. Around 150 are due in kindergartens, old people’s homes or hospitals by December 24th.
