The alternative venue for the opera could be built in the huge semicircle of the unfinished NS Congress Hall. To the right of the horseshoe is the documentation center with its pole, which architect Günther Domenig drove into the Nazi building.

A new opera building on the Nazi colossal structure? That is the plan in Nuremberg. Hans-Christian Täubrich, founding director of the Documentation Center Nazi Party Rally Grounds, has very little understanding for this – and is amazed at what doesn’t play a role in the debate.

This Wednesday, the Nuremberg city council wants to decide exactly where the interim opera was erected on the former Nazi party rally grounds shall be. The opinion of the historians from the Documentation Center Nazi Party Rally Grounds has recently gotten a little under the wheels, the city insists on “strict communication” on this issue, which also applies to the historians employed by the city. On the other hand, the founding director of the renowned house, Hans-Christian Täubrich, can express himself completely freely. He managed the house from its opening in 2001 to 2014 – and remains critical.
