Nuremberg – Palace of Justice should be on Unesco World Heritage List – Bavaria

Bavaria recommends that the Conference of Ministers of Education and Culture include the Nuremberg Palace of Justice and the Munich Olympic Park on the list of proposals for UNESCO World Heritage Sites. According to Justice Minister Georg Eisenreich, “the birth of modern international criminal law” had struck in room 600. In the Palace of Justice for the first time leading representatives of a state had to answer for their crimes against peace and humanity before an international court. The principles of international criminal law applied were confirmed by the United Nations in the so-called Nuremberg Principles. Art Minister Bernd Sibler emphasized that legal history had been written with it. The Olympiapark also stands for the victory of a new democratic social order in post-war Germany. With its modern architecture, the complex embodies the Olympic spirit of peace and community. At the same time, however, it was also “a permanent reminder for an inhuman attack,” explained Sibler. Both places are therefore of exceptional universal value. The current German list of proposals will be processed in the coming years, so the Free State is now proposing Nuremberg and Munich for updating it.
