Nupes: Jean-Luc Mélenchon opens “a page of history” and tackles future dissidents in the legislative elections

The New Popular Ecological and Social Union was launched this Saturday, May 7 by an offensive speech in view of the legislative elections.

A rainbow “V”. Saturday at the end of the convention of the New Popular Ecological and Social Union (Nupes) which brings together the left-wing parties having concluded an agreement for the legislative elections, the logo of this alliance obtained after thirteen days of negotiations was presented. A “V” as the sign of victory, and rainbow as the colors of the left who call for it: socialists, communists, greens, rebellious…

Their joint presence in Aubervilliers was already something, and the leaders of the said parties were pleased to point it out from the podium. Olivier Faure (PS) also pleaded for the peaceful collective: “Rather than telling the socialists ‘you are traitors’, go tell them ‘we understood that we could be together’.”

Just as Julien Bayou (EELV) considered that by this compromise “the no and the yes in the 2005 referendum are reconciled”: “Let us disobey to save Europe, to redirect European policies towards the best social and ecological” , he said in particular. As for Fabien Roussel (PC), he was delighted that “happy reforms are within reach, that’s the event of the day!”

A tackle to dissidents

Intervening naturally at the end, the leader of La France insoumise, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, welcomed the “historical depth” of the moment. “We are writing a page in the political history of France, he insisted with a certain solemnity. And because we are writing this page in this way, we can claim to write a page of history of France.”

“It’s not just an electoral agreement, further specified the leader of the rebellious. It is an act of collective resistance to an era of social, ecological and democratic mistreatment.” And to affirm to want to make Nupes, the new durable face of the left: “It will not be done alone. It will be done by discussion, by camaraderie, by fraternity… We will have to be radicals, but a concrete, tenable radicality.”

Jean-Luc Mélenchon also confirmed that he would “probably not be a candidate” in June and that this would in no way prevent him from being appointed Prime Minister. He spoke about the dissenting candidacies on the left: “All the families are in the popular union. Those who present candidates against the popular union are macronist candidates, because they only serve Macron.”

Nevertheless, at the time of celebrating the first victory that this alliance represents for them, some will have preferred to retain his watchword: “Let’s each be better for the collective, and the collective will be better for each.”
