The number of politically motivated attacks on refugees has increased significantly: in 2023, the police in Germany counted 2,378 crimes – almost twice as many as in the previous year. 219 people were injured.

Last year, the police recorded significantly more suspected politically motivated attacks on refugees in Germany than in the previous year. This emerges from preliminary figures from the Federal Ministry of the Interior, which the left-wing politician Clara Bünger asked for and which the ARD capital studio present.

Accordingly, the security authorities registered a total of 2,378 crimes, including 313 violent crimes. 219 people were injured.

The numbers showed almost doubling compared to the previous year: in 2022 there were 1,248 attacks against refugees. According to the information, more cases were last counted in 2016, when there were 2,545 crimes.

“Worrying, but it doesn’t come as a surprise”

According to the Interior Ministry, the security authorities also recorded 180 crimes against refugee accommodation, the highest number since 2017. In 2022, the number of attacks on such facilities was 70.

“The enormous increase in crimes against refugees is very worrying, but does not come as a surprise,” explains Bünger. She referred to the federal government’s tougher deportation rules and the support of the AfD. “It’s no wonder that racists feel emboldened in such a social situation to put the omnipresent resentment into action and attack refugees.”
